Understanding “Crows Feet” and What Causes Them

Our eyes are one of our most important features and no one wants to have them to be surrounded by those ugly little wrinkles known as “crows feet”. So what causes crows feet? The truth is there are several factors that cause these fine lines.

Unfortunately, the skin around the eyes is one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Crows feet can be caused by sun damage to the thin, delicate skin of the eyelids. Sun exposure and UV rays ruin our skin’s collagen and cause early signs of aging.

The second cause, believe it or not, is because our eyelids can also be damaged by the muscle that lies underneath. You see, the muscle under our eyelids is constantly contracting and causing the skin to fold. As we age, these tiny folds cause lines or “crows feet” and unfortunately they tend to become a permanent part of our face.

So how do we reduce the look of wrinkles around the eyes? There are two main forms of correction – surgical treatments and natural protection and prevention.

Surgical wrinkle treatments used to reduce the look of crows feet, include Botox™ injections, chemical peels and laser resurfacing. The main benefit of these procedures is their effectiveness at specifically targeting damaged skin around the eyes. Most procedures have quick recovery periods and minimal healing time. Always consult your physician or plastic surgeon before deciding which surgical treatment will work best for you.

The best, and possibly easiest way to prevent crows feet and turn back the clock, is to protect your skin from the elements. Wear sun block, sunglasses and a hat whenever you are out in the sun, around water, when skiing or enjoying the winter snow.

So start protecting your skin today. Don’t wait another minute. Our eyes are so very important – don’t take them for granted.
