It seems no matter where you turn these days; someone is always talking about acai. So what is acai? And why is everyone from Oprah to Rachael Ray talking so much about it? I needed to find out.
I first heard of Acai (and in case you wondered, it is pronounced ah-sigh-ee) through The Oprah Winfrey Show and her well known guest Dr. Nicholas Perricone. He named the berry as one of his top 10 super foods that help to combat aging, cholesterol and weight.
This wee little berry, which is about the size of a grape, has been promoted as one of the most power packed foods on the planet! It is harvested from the Brazilian rainforest and is the fruit from the acai palm tree. It looks a lot like a blackberry and tastes like one too, but it also has a subtle chocolate flavor.
In the villages of the Amazon, the fruit and its juices are consumed regularly as a way to stay healthy. But because the fruit will spoil within a day of being harvested, unless you leave in the rainforest, you don’t have the luxury of consuming the fresh fruit.
For us, acai is sold most commonly as juice or in frozen pulp form and can be found at most health food stores. Both the pulp and the juice are jam-packed with antioxidants that help fight off the signs of aging. In fact, these little power berries have 10-30 times more nutritional benefits than red grapes and red wine!
Acai also contains essential amino and fatty acids that absorb in to the skin to make the skin softer and help regenerate facial muscle as well. I will be talking more about the health and anti-aging benefits of acai in part 2 of my acai series here at Eye-Wrinkles.com.
Now you can see why everyone is talking about acai. And you never have to wonder what is acai again!
